※ 차임이란?
'차임 벨'(Chime bell)은 '튜블라 벨'이라고도 하는데, 낮은 소리를 내는 교회 종소리를 오케스트라에 사용해 보려는 시도로서 제작된 악기이다.
보통 18개의 길이가 다른 금속 원통관(Tube)을 피아노의 건반과 같이 배열하여 틀에 매달아놓고 연주한다.
이것은 1~2인치 직경의 속이 빈 강철로 만들어진 관으로 그 길이는 음 높이에 따라 다르다. 특별히 제작된 나무 망치로 연주자는 벨이 매달린 윗 부분을 연주한다.
원통관의 상단 꼭대기를 해머로 쳐서 연주하는데, 이 해머는 나무로 된 것과 가죽을 말아서 단단하게 한 것 등이 있다.
음높이와 음질은 관의 길이, 직경, 벽의 두께 등에 의하여 결정되고 음색은 맑고 여운이 길며 중간에서 댐퍼(Dumper)로 조절할 수 있다.
기보법은 보통 높은 음자리표를 사용하며 실제 음을 그대로 기보한다. 그러나 벨의 실제음은 한 옥타브 높으며, 실제 소리보다 낮은 소리라는 착각을 주기 때문에 그대로 기보한다.
차이코프스키의 서곡의 마지막 부분과 '베르디'의 오페라 '일트로바토레'중 '감옥장면'등에서 관현악에 사용된 벨의 특징을 감상할 수 있다.
