CASTEREDE

Jacques Casterède was born in Paris in 1926, and gained his baccalaureate in elementary mathematics before going on to the the Paris Conservatory where he was to win prizes in piano, chamber music, harmony, composition (with Tony Aubin), analysis and æsthetics in music (with Olivier Messiaen). Having won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1953, he then spent four years in the Villa Medici before taking up a position at the Paris Conservatory, where he taught musical training for singers, musical analysis and composition. His very many works, which include symphonies, concertos, ballets, ensemble and chamber music, are performed throughout France, Germany and Italy as well as in America and Canada. His music is essentially melodic, often using modal scales over elaborate and varied rhythmic structures.
