그의 첫 바이올린 소나타(HN 980)가 엄청난 호응을 얻은 후 포레는 계속해서 실내악에 전념하는 것이 확실해졌습니다. 1880년에는 소나타의 느린 악장을 위한 첼로와 피아노를 위한 소품을 작곡했습니다.
그 후 포레는 소나타 프로젝트를 포기하고 대신 "엘레지"라는 제목으로 이 곡을 발표했습니다. 이 곡의 성공이 너무 커서 포레는 출판사로부터 더 많은 곡을 써달라는 요청을 받았고, 지휘자 에두아르 콜론은 1895년 오케스트라 버전의 "엘레지"를 의뢰하여 2년 후 초연했습니다. 평소와 마찬가지로 Urtext 에디션에는 표시된 솔로 파트와 표시되지 않은 솔로 파트가 모두 포함되어 있습니다.
