베토벤이 붙인 제목은 ‘환상곡풍 소나타’이지만, 음악계는 이 작품을 <월광> 소나타로 알고 있다. 이 별칭은 이미 작곡가 생전에 있었던 것으로, 독일의 시인 루트비히 렐슈타프는 1823년 제1악장에 ‘해질 무렵 호수가 달빛 아래 고요히 쉬고; 물결이 어두운 둑에 부딪힌다’고 썼으며, 러시아의 작가 빌헬름 폰 렌츠는 ‘그것은 마치 초승달에 희미하게 빛나는 외로운 평원 한가운데 있는 거대한 무덤을 보게 되는 것과 같다’고 적었다. 머레이 페라이어와 노르베르트 게르츠가 본 에디션의 서문에서 최신 연구를 언급하며 설명하고 있는 것처럼, 베토벤은 에올리언 하프의 소리에 영향을 받았는지도 모른다. 본 에디션의 핑거링 또한 페라이어가 제공했다.
