크로탈레스의 유래
'안틱 심벌즈'(antique cymbals)라고 불려지는 '크로테일'(Crotales)은 고대 심벌즈라는 이름 그대로 고대 그리스의 악기에서 모형을 취한 아주 작은 심벌즈이다. 직경이 7~13cm이며 재질은 황동을 주재료로 하고 있으며 원반형으로 만들어졌다. 보통 한쌍으로 만들어져 양손에 한 개씩을 잡고 가장자리의 둘레를 가볍게 쳐서 소리를 내는데 음향은 벨과 같은 소리를 내며 그 음이 명확하다. 때로는 한개를 고정시켜 놓고 채로 치기도 한다. 항상 금속 말렛을 사용하지만 심벌즈처럼 양손으로 두개를 서로 부딪히게 할수도 있다. 이 원반들은 나무판 위에 피아노 건반처럼 배치 될 수도 있다.
이 '안틱 심벌즈'를 사용해서, 무척 아름다운 효과를 주고 있다. 음색이 '그로켄슈필'과 닮아서, 이 악기가 없을 때는 '그로켄슈필'이 대용될 때도 있다. '베를리오즈'(H.Berlioz)가 '로미오와 줄리엣'에서 , '드비쉬'(C.Debussy)가 '목신의 오후(1894)'에서 '스트라빈스키'가 무용음악 '봄의 제전(1913)'에서 사용하여 널리 알려지게 되었다. 특정한 음 높이를 갖고 있으며, 특히 건반 배열형의 '크로테일'인 경우 반 음계적 스케일까지 가능하므로 글로켄슈필처럼 쓰이기도 하고, 여운이 길어 트라이앵글의 효과를 낼 수도 있다.
